Abstract

This essay establishes Lope de Vega's Castelvines y Monteses as a significant foil to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, drawing on the same source. Despite Shakespeare's suoperior poetry, Lope's version may well be more successful in performance, exploiting a largely happy emding.
