Investigating the Potential of Using a Multimodal Approach to Reduce Air Passenger Delay: A Case Study of Hongqiao Transportation Hub
Abstract
This study examines whether an integrated air–rail transportation hub can provide an effective recovery option for passengers whose flights have been canceled or significantly delayed. Using Shanghai Hongqiao Transportation Hub as a case study, the study analyzes 8,580 stated-preference observations collected from 715 respondents. A discrete choice model is developed to identify the factors influencing whether passengers wait for the next flight operated by the same airline, transfer to another airline, or switch to high-speed rail. The results show that travel time, travel cost, trip purpose, frequent-flyer membership, and luggage-transfer services significantly influence passenger choices. The findings provide insights for multimodal passenger recovery, air–rail integration, and transportation policy.
