Expedition by Juan de Uribarri in 1706 to El Cuartelejo to repatriate Picuris Indians to New Mexico

Abstract

Documents concerning the expedition led by Captain Juan de Uribarri in 1706 to the Apache settlement known as El Cuartelejo in order to repatriate the Picuris Indians who had taken refuge there at the time of the Pueblo Indian revolt of 1696. The documents include a petition by the Franciscan Father Juan Álvarez, asking the authorities of New Spain to remedy the lamentable state of the Franciscan missions of New Mexico, devastated by the Pueblo Indian revolts that began in 1680.
