The role of communication theory in supporting observationally based sciences; or, What happens when psychologists visit a field station?

Abstract

We utilize an analogy with communication theory to highlight how information and uncertainty flow from the world into our understanding of the world. The uncertainty of geological observations can be combined with an evaluation of the consistency and coherence of patterns to indicate the quality of a conceptual model.
