The California Traffic Safety Survey is an annual survey overseen by the University of California Berkeley Safe Transportation Research and Education Center (SafeTREC) and sponsored by the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). This statewide survey, initiated in 2010, collects data on public safety perceptions, driver behavior, and awareness of traffic safety campaigns. While administered in person through 2019, the survey transitioned to a self-dministered online panel in 2020. The online survey takes approximately five to ten minutes to complete. Eligible participants must be California residents who are at least 18 years old and hold a valid driver’s license.

Data collection for the 2026 survey, administered from June to July 2026, is now complete. This report describes the survey results and highlights key insights to inform targeted strategies to address road safety.
