Whether you are an end-user or developer of systems in your domain, your work depends in some way upon access to usable and reliable software. With this commentary we are excited to introduce the User Experience department in Computing Science & Engineering, to examine the user experience of computing in scientific and engineering research by exploring the fascinating dynamics encountered by end-users, end-user developers, engineers at scientific facilities, and others as they work to create and use advanced software.
