Submission Guidelines
Online Submission
Articles that do not adhere to the journal’s guidelines, including citation and transliteration protocols, will be returned to the author and will not be forwarded for review until the author makes the necessary corrections. The journal does not accept material that has appeared previously, whether in print or electronically, or is under consideration for publication elsewhere. All submissions must be made as a Word document (not PDF) and done online through the journal website. Prospective authors must click the “submit” button on the top right corner of the journal homepage and register. Once a submission is accepted and gone through the review process, prospective authors must upload their revised submission the same way as above. Each article will be reviewed by two reviewers, at least one of whom will be on the editorial or advisory board of the journal.
Peer Review
All submissions will undergo double-anonymous peer review (where neither the author nor the reviewer will know one another’s names). Authors should check footnotes and internal references to ensure that anonymized articles do not contain any references that identify the author. Once articles have been accepted for publication, authors may change these references in revision. Each submission must have a title page that contains the author’s information preceding the complete text.

Submission Requirements
Language
Contributions should be written in English. Spellings should follow American English conventions. Contributors should consult the New Oxford American Dictionary and the Chicago Manual of Style for punctuation, spelling, hyphenation, and notation formatting.
Length
Manuscripts should be between 8,000 and 10,000 words (inclusive of footnotes, but not the bibliography). Book reviews should be between 1,000-1,500 words.
Transliteration System
For Persian and Arabic words, the authors should follow the transliteration system of the International Journal of Middle East Studies (IJMES) or the Library of Congress (LoC) but without the use of diacritical marks for consonants in Persian:
For IJMES see: https://www.cambridge.org/core/services/aop-file-manager/file/57d83390f6ea5a022234b400/transchart.pdf
For LoC see: https://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/roman.html
For Ottoman Turkish, modern Turkish spelling may be used.
For Urdu, the authors should follow the transliteration system of the Journal of Urdu Studies but without the use of diacritical marks for consonants except for indicating retroflexes.
Other South Asian languages should be transliterated following simplified Library of Congress conventions similar to those listed above.
Manuscript Structure
Manuscripts should be aligned left, double-spaced throughout in 12-point font.
Abstract and Keywords
All full articles should include an abstract of around 150 words, as well as a list of roughly 5-8 keywords.
Title Page
The Word file must include a title page with author information (full name, relevant titles, institutional affiliation, and an email address), the title, abstract, and keywords.
Headings
Headings should be flush left and in bold. Second level headings should be in bold italics.
Citations and Footnotes
The journal uses footnotes instead of endnotes. All citations should follow the “Notes and Bibliography Style” of the Chicago Manual of Style and use shortened notes in conjunction with a full bibliography.
Images and Captions
A submission cannot have more than twenty images. Please do not submit individual TIFFs or JPEGs. For initial submissions, embed images in a separate Word document or PDF. Each image should have a caption that provides identifying information and appropriate image credits. If an article is accepted for publication, authors will receive additional image specifications and will be responsible for securing all necessary permissions.
For use of “alt text” for images, authors may follow these guidelines: https://www.w3.org/WAI/tutorials/images/
Bibliography
A complete bibliography should be given at the end of the manuscript, alphabetically according to the author’s surname. For additional instructions on citing books, edited books, articles in an edited volume, multi-volume work, journal articles, forthcoming work, dissertations or thesis, newspaper articles, other-language work with translated title included, translated work, see the guidelines offered by the Journal of Urdu Studies.
Abbreviations
Avoid abbreviations.
Punctuation Marks
All punctuation marks which are placed next to quotation marks should generally be included within the quotation marks (e.g. “correct,” versus “incorrect”, etc.). Moreover, if the number referring to a footnote is placed next to a punctuation mark, it should generally be placed behind the punctuation mark (unless the context exigently requires it to be arranged in a different way).
Dates
Write years out in full: the 1600s; 1605-1627; seventeenth century (hyphenated if used adjectivally). All dates should be given in the Common Era.
Numbers
Follow the Chicago Manual of Style.
Quotations
Follow the Chicago Manual of Style.
Acknowledgements
If an author wishes to give acknowledgements, these should be placed in the last section of the manuscript before the Bibliography.
Production
Upon acceptance, a Word document of the article will be sent to the author to check for factual and typographical errors. At this stage in the process only minor corrections will be allowed. The expectation is that the piece will be returned within two weeks of receipt by the author.
Removal
Once published, a journal article cannot generally be revised or removed. We feel it is important to provide perpetual access to materials published whenever possible and appropriate. However, we will remove publications under special circumstances, including in the case of submission errors, rights violations, or inappropriate content. Please be aware, however, that even after the removal of a work, a citation to the work will remain in our system, along with a URL. If you would like your work removed from eScholarship, please contact the editors.
Revising Work
Once manuscripts are published, we are generally unable to revise them. If a significant error or omission is discovered, contact the editors.
