Please send full-length submissions, with abstract, bio, 5 keywords, and images, to refractjournal@ucsc.edu.

• Papers should range from 6,000-10,000 words in length.
• Written submissions should follow Chicago Manual of Style 17th Edition guidelines for Humanities and should use the note and shortened note footnote formatting, with complete citation information.
• Texts should be submitted as DOC files and should include an abstract, bio, and keywords at the end of the body text.
• Images should be submitted separately from your Word file as JPEGs. Captions or indications of where the images would be placed should be marked within the body of the piece.
• Submissions will be evaluated on relevance to themes, depth of research, completeness of work, and in accordance with Refract’s engagement with Visual Studies.
• All editorial decisions are made on the basis of completed texts, and it is typical for our essays to go through several rounds of editing. We thus reserve the right to edit submissions selected for publication. Late or incomplete submissions will not be considered.

Reviews and Interviews

Refract seeks reviews that grapple with the topics and questions raised in our CFP.

• Reviews on books, exhibitions, and films should not exceed 1,000 words in length.

• Interviews should creatively and critically engage with the issues raised in the CFP and should not exceed 3,000 words in length

• Written submissions should follow Chicago Manual of Style 17th Edition guidelines for Humanities and should use the note and shortened note footnote formatting, with complete citation information. Image and file type should follow the above listed protocol for paper submissions.

Creative Works

Refract encourages creative works which address the themes described in the CFP.

• Creative works include but are not limited to painting, sound, photography, drawing, film, collaborative reviews, and digital projects.

• Submissions should be accompanied by a critically engaged artist statement. If accepted, contributors should expect the editorial board to work with them on making their artist statement a piece of critical writing/thinking in its own right. The statement should be submitted as a DOC file.

• Images should be 300 dpi JPEGs. Videos should be submitted in MP4 file format and should include 3-5 JPEG film stills with the submission.
