Cover: Proceedings of the Symposium on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Centrifuge Modeling, National Geotechnical Centrifuge, Department of Civil Engineering, University of California Davis

Introduction: A symposium on Recent Advances in Geotechnical Centrifuge Modeling was held on July 18-20, 1984 at the University of California at Davis. The symposium was sponsored by the National Science Foundation's Geotechnical Engineering Program and the Center for Geotechnical Modeling at the University of California at Davis.

The symposium offered an opportunity for a meeting of the InternationalCommittee on Centrifuges of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering. The U.S. participants also met to discuss theadvancement of the centrifuge modeling technique in the U.S. A request is being transmitted to the American Society of Civil Engineers to establish a subcommittee on centrifuges within the Geotechnical Engineering Division.

    History of Chemical Engineering (Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering) at the University of California, Berkeley including establishment of department within the College of Chemistry. The department has an unusual history among chemical engineering programs in the United States and also has become one of the most respected departments in that area. Although not unique, only a few chemical engineering programs sit outside of engineering departments in the United States.

      A thermal analysis was conducted on a typical 5-ton rooftop air-conditioner to determine the effects on the supply air temperature and cooling performance by adding a highly reflective coating material to its external surfaces. The analysis considered several emissivity values. Under typical conditions, low emissivity (highly reflective) surfaces produced a reduction in the supply air temperature of 0.21°F when compared to high emissivity (low reflectivity) surfaces. In addition, the mixed air temperature was reduced by 0.07°F when a low emissivity (ε = 0.2) surface was considered. The result of this reduced mixed air temperature is a lower coil-entering air temperature, which, in turn, produced an increase of 0.29 percent in the cooling capacity of the unit. B

          The concept of hydrogen internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs) is not new, but has gained renewed interest lately, especially for heavy-duty trucks. Different from hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), which represent a novel zero-emission technology, hydrogen engines are modified conventional engines running on hydrogen fuel instead of gasoline or diesel. This study presents a comparative review of hydrogen engines and fuel cells, based on existing reports and discussions with industry. We consider aspects such as vehicle efficiency, greenhouse gas (GHG) and criteria pollutant emissions, hydrogen fuel purity, vehicle attributes, vehicle acquisition costs, total costs of ownership, and new policies. We find that hydrogen ICEVs offer some advantages and disadvantages: advantages include lower production cost and potentially greater reliability; disadvantages include potentially overall lower efficiency (and thus higher fuel cost) and lack of zero-vehicle-emission operation. While the technologies could be complementary (e.g., hydrogen ICEVs serving as a transition technology toward FCEVs), they also may compete, with success for hydrogen ICEVs resulting in setbacks for FCEV market success.

            This paper presents a characterization of heavy civil engineering in the context of lean construction and Industry 4.0. Production characteristics of earthworks are compared with those of multi-story construction. The paper focuses on the equipment use of specialty foundation contractors and shows the variety in variability encountered in the Kelly pile drilling process, as described by industry experts. The authors identify seven sources of variability that affect production performance, classify each one by type, and then describe technologies to harness them. The paper critically examines design considerations in a production system that highly depends on equipment and highlights that advances in implementation of Industry 4.0 will demand ongoing effort in reconfiguring such systems.

                Robust interoperability methods are needed in manufacturing systems to implement computeraided process planning algorithms and to verify their effectiveness. In this paper we discuss applying MTConnect, an open-source standard for data exchange in manufacturing systems, in addressing two specific issues in process planning and verification. We use data from an MTConnect-compliant machine tool to estimate the cycle time required for machining complex parts in that machine. MTConnect data is also used in verifying the conformance of toolpaths to the required part features by comparing the features created by the actual tool positions to the required part features using CAD tools. We demonstrate the capabilities of MTConnect in easily enabling process planning and verification in an industrial environment.

                  A compiler course with a term-long project is a staple of many undergraduate computer science curricula and often a cornerstone a program's applied-engineering component. Software engineering expertise can help a student complete such a course, yet that expertise is often lacking. This problem can be addressed without detracting from the core class material by integrating a few simple software engineering practices into the course. A domain-specific, risk-driven approach minimizes overhead and keeps the compiler material in focus, while treating the project as a ``real world'' enterprise reinforces key engineering lessons. The method might be called ``syntax-directed software engineering'', being driven by a specification centered around a BNF-style grammar. Engineering lessons are reinforced with general engineering principles and contextualization of the subject matter. The approach can be taught without substantial software engineering background. The approach of domain-specific risk-driven software engineering can be applied in courses such as operating systems by redesigning the practices around the its domain.

                    Impacts and Future Directions (2022)
                    The Professional Development Program (PDP) was a highly impactful and innovative program that was run by the Institute for Scientist & Engineer Educators for twenty years, from 2001–2020. The program trained early-career scientists and engineers to teach effectively and inclusively, while also developing participants’ skills in leadership, collaboration, and teamwork. In this paper, we summarize important aspects of the PDP and some of the program’s major outcomes, describe legacies of the program, and share recommendations based on two decades of experience. A large section of this paper details aspects of the PDP that we consider essential to the program but that might not be apparent from other documentation of the program. Recommendations for others interested in professional development of STEM graduate students and postdoctoral scholars are: 1) invest in establishing program culture; 2) prepare participants pursuing all STEM career paths for inclusive teaching; 3) focus on teaching and learning authentic STEM practices of participants’ fields; 4) provide authentic and challenging contexts for practicing professional skills; 5) model all aspects of what participants are expected to do; and 6) provide opportunities for growth and becoming a collaborator within the community.
