A review and analysis of Fourier transform spectroscopy in the soft x-ray region: advancing historical designs with modern technology

Abstract

We present a comprehensive review of Fourier transform spectroscopy in the soft x-ray region, focusing on Mach-Zehnder interferometer configurations. This study evaluates advantages over traditional grating-based methods, including higher resolution potential (>10,000) and rapid data acquisition. We examine historical implementations and their limitations, highlighting how recent advances in laser interferometry, mechanical stability, and detector technology may enable successful development. Through detailed simulations of interferometer schemes and beam splitter designs, we demonstrate how modern piezoelectric stages and feedback systems could overcome previous technical challenges. Applications for resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments at advanced light sources are discussed.
