The essay will describe the emergence of several landscape-scale conservation initiatives in such locations as the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, Crown of the Continent Ecosystem, Colorado Plateau, and the California Desert, where national parks and other federally protected areas anchor such efforts. It will then explore the legal and policy basis for such initiatives as well as suggestions to further legitimize this next frontier in nature conservation.
