People who advocate for America's public lands and waters, and the managing agencies themselves, must directly support the development of critical thinking skills and civics literacy among the general public in order to bolster a well-functioning democracy — upon which these protected places depend. Three actions are proposed: revive and expand civic engagement, justify interpretation in areas under attack by the current administration, and defend and promote the essentialness of public lands and waters.
