The Lack of Sex Differences in Declining Endogamy in Hyderabad, India
Abstract
Assumptions concerning Indian social structure & effects of the patriarchal system are examined. Two hypotheses predicting greater control over women's than men's choices for marriage are tested & largely invalidated, using 1900-1975 statistical data showing the subcaste of marriage partners of M & F members of the Kayasth caste of Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India. A similar decline in endogamy was found for both sexes. It is also noted that siblings rather than sisters are the appropriate units of analysis for exogamous marriages, & that there is a progression within families from intersubcaste to intercaste marriages. 7 Tables, 13 References.
