We briefly review howfluctuation measurements may help to reveal the properties of the QCD phase diagram. We further discuss various background effects, such as charge conservation, which contribute to fluctuation observables and which need to be well understood before definitive conclusions about a possible phase structure can be drawn. © 2013 American Institute of Physics.
