Noise

Abstract

Sound is critically important to marine mammals. While they are adapted to live in naturally noisy environments, noise from various sources, including human activities, can influence their behavior, communication systems, hearing, and ultimately survival. This is an area of rapid progress in both the scientific understanding of how noise exposure context influences the type and probability of response, and how such data can be used to evaluate and mitigate potential negative effects of human ocean noise.
