Abstract

• Caring for complex patient populations requires effective ways to evaluate a patient's physical candidacy for surgery. Research has shown an association between frailty and adverse postoperative outcomes, including readmission, discharge to location other than home, serious complications and mortality.

• Frailty: A syndrome of reduced physiologic reserve and increased vulnerability to stressors leading to early decline with and increased risk of mortality.
