Abstract

What does it look like to read a TTRPG as an ecological text? This essay attempts an ecocritical reading of the 5th edition of Dungeons & Dragons, drawing on Alenda Y. Chang’s “Games as Environmental Texts,” which critiques of the extractivist tropes common to many video games. The essay explores variety of techniques that designers might employ for constructing more environmentally conscious TTRPGs and catalogs several moves towards “green” TTRPGs that independent game designers are already making.
