About
UCLA Grand Challenges is a campus-wide initiative that was started by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research in 2012. Through this initiative, UCLA has identified two Grand Challenges to date: the Sustainable LA Grand Challenge (2013) and the Depression Grand Challenge (2015). UCLA is the first campus to have identified a campus-wide Grand Challenge and one that commits to solving a particular societal issue. Since launching its first Grand Challenge, a number of other universities have looked to UCLA as a model and have created their own programs. This page was created to publicly share documents of interest related to university-led Grand Challenges (potentially also applicable to entities from other sectors). To join the related Community of Practice google group, please request membership through this link: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/universitygcs.

Report on University-Led Grand Challenges
This report is designed to provide an overview of the attributes and benefits of university-led Grand Challenges, with a summary of best practices and strategies for universities currently engaged or considering starting their own programs. The report also makes the case for a new Community of Practice on University-Led Grand Challenges and highlights opportunities for other sectors—philanthropy, associations, professional organizations, and Federal, State, and local governments—to support and participate in these efforts.
