Fault-Free Optimal Control Sequence Specifications

Abstract

Fault-free optimal control refers to a suite of capabilities to streamline and automate the correction of common HVAC faults, and the implementation of advanced HVAC control strategies. These capabilities are implemented using energy management and information system (EMIS) software integrated with the building automation system (BAS). They are being delivered by the U.S. Department of Energy and Berkeley Lab in partnership with leading providers of smart building analytics. The spectrum of fault-free optimal control strategies ranges from one-time fixes - where common control faults are automatically identified and upon user approval, automatically corrected - to continuous supervisory updates of control parameters. These supervisory updates can drive an afternoon of demand response or even resets that provide year-round energy-efficient operation.
