SOURCE PROVENANCE OF VOLCANIC ROCK ARTIFACTS FROM THE ROBERT WEBER COLLECTION, SOCORRO COUNTY, NEW MEXICO

Abstract

The analysis here of 73 Paleoindian projectile points from the Robert Weber collection from Socorro County, New Mexico indicates a mainly local procurement of the hydrothermally altered rhyolite from the Black Canyon and Sedillo Hills sources in the Socorro Volcanic Field, called "Socorro Jasper" in the archaeological vernacular (see cover image). This ratio of Black Canyon to Sedillo hill chemical groups is similar to the results obtained by Dello-Russo in his analysis of Paleondian and Archaic projectile points and source standards from these two sources (2004).
