This paper examines the historic role and place of outdoor recreation in the National Landscape Conservation System (now called the National Conservation Lands) and how these lands can coexist with the growing demand for outdoor recreation. We will explore why this critical 21st-century conservation system needs to continue to provide diverse outdoor recreation opportunities, and why sustainable outdoor recreation needs the National Conservation Lands.
