SOURCE PROVENANCE OF OBSIDIAN ARTIFACTS FROM THE CLEARWATER SITE (AZ BB:13:6 ASM), SOUTHERN ARIZONA

Abstract

The results of the x-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF) here of 7 obsidian artifacts from the Early Cienega Phase Clearwater Site, indicate a relatively diverse obsidian source provenance in nearly opposite directions (see cover image). While most of the artifacts, including the two projectile points were produced from the Cow Canyon source in eastern Arizona, or the secondary deposits in Gila River Quaternary alluvium, two of the debitage pieces were produced from the Los Vidrios or Los Sitios del Agua sources in northern Sonora.
