In this introduction to the theme papers in this issue of Parks Stewardship Forum, published under the title "Refoundation: Does Place-Based Conservation in America Need to Start Over?", the four theme editors review what the term "Refoundation" means, the foundation of laws and procedures currently being undermined, the reasons why that foundation has proven to be so fragile, the general outlines of the essays that follow, and plans for further essays.
