Submission Guidelines

The Journal of Critical Mixed Race Studies (JCMRS) welcomes interdisciplinary scholarly, creative, and community‑engaged submissions that advance critical understandings of mixedness, racialization, identity, culture, and liberation. Please review the following guidelines carefully before submitting your manuscript.

1. Submission Categories

JCMRS accepts the following eight submission types:

Research Articles

6,000–10,000 words
Peer‑reviewed, original empirical (of any methodology), theoretical, or historical research.

Critical Interventions

2,000–4,000 words
Short, timely essays offering sharp conceptual, theoretical, or political insight.

Methodological Innovations

3,000–6,000 words
Essays exploring new or adapted methods relevant to the study of mixedness and racialization.

Visual Arts & Creative Portfolios

5–15 images + 1,000–3,000‑word artist statement
High‑quality images with captions and alt text required.

Creative Writing

Up to 3,500 words
Poetry, hybrid work, fiction, and other literary forms.

Dialogues & Roundtables

2,000–6,000 words
Multi‑voice conversations, dialogues, or co‑authored exchanges.

Practitioner Reflections

1,500–4,000 words
Practice‑based insights from educators, community practitioners, organizers, and others.

Book & Media Reviews

1,000–2,500 words
Reviews of books, films, exhibitions, performances, and other cultural works relevant to CMRS.

2. Formatting & Style Requirements

Manuscripts must be submitted in .docx format.
Use APA 7th edition (preferred) or Chicago/MLA if used consistently throughout.
Double‑spaced, 12‑point font with page numbers.
Include a 150–250‑word abstract for scholarly submissions.
Remove all identifying information from the manuscript for double‑anonymous review.
Include correctly formatted in‑text citations and a complete reference list.

3. Accessibility Requirements

To support accessible scholarly publishing, all submissions must include:

Alt text for images, figures, and artwork
Captions for images, tables, or visual materials
Transcripts for audio or video content
Clear labeling of all figures, tables, and supplemental files

4. Required Files at Submission

Please prepare the following:

Main Manuscript (.docx)

Fully anonymized
Includes all text, figure placeholders, tables, and references

Title Page (separate file)

Author name(s) & affiliations
Contact email
Acknowledgments (optional)
AI usage disclosure (if applicable)

Figures or Artwork Files (if applicable)

High‑resolution JPG or PNG
Labeled consistently with manuscript references

Captions & Alt Text Document (if needed)
Audio/Video Files or Links (if applicable)

Include transcripts or captions

Permissions Documentation (if applicable)

For use of third‑party copyrighted materials

5. Ethical & AI Use Requirements

Authors must:

Ensure all research adheres to ethical standards (including IRB when applicable)
Secure permissions for all third‑party images or materials
Maintain citation integrity and accuracy
Disclose any use of generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, DALL·E, automated translators/summarizers) and describe their role
Verify that AI has not fabricated or altered citations, data, or analysis

6. Submission Process

Submissions must be uploaded via the Janeway submission portal on eScholarship. During the submission process, you will:

Select your submission type
Upload the required files
Enter metadata (title, abstract, keywords)
Confirm author information (in separate title page only)
Complete required checkboxes
Submit for editorial review

7. Publication Cycle

JCMRS publishes two issues per year.
2026 Priority Deadlines:

Fall 2026 Issue: April 30, 2026

(Priority given to revised papers presented at the February 2026 CMRS Conference - Please add a note to editor or include in title page acknowledgement info on your presentation)

Winter 2026/27 Issue: August 15, 2026

Rolling submissions are accepted year‑round.
