Call for Editors
We invite applications for the roles of Associate Editor, Professional Development Coordinator(s), and Managing Editor for The Journal of Diversity and Equity in Educational Development (JDEED). JDEED is an open-access, peer-reviewed publication dedicated to developing and sustaining a scholarly space for minoritized voices in higher education and to centering dynamic conversations about diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) practices, theories, and possibilities. We are focused on educational development in a North American higher education context.
We seek colleagues interested in engaging in scholarly conversations about DEIB in the field of educational development. More information about the current editorial team and editorial positions can be found on our website. The three open editorial positions are:
- Associate Editor, Commentaries. Associate Editors play a meaningful role in shaping the journal’s content by overseeing reviews, guiding and mentoring authors, and helping ensure that final manuscripts align with our standards and mission. Commentaries are brief op-ed pieces in which scholars and practitioners share timely insights, critiques, and reflections on current events to foster ongoing dialogue and critical discussion within the educational development community. The Associate Editor will oversee the review process for commentaries from initial review to decision; offer timely, constructive, and developmental feedback to writers; create, review and revise rubrics as needed; and serve as the first-round reviewer for manuscripts in this section undergoing editorial review. We view the Associate Editor role as an entry-point into academic publishing, and we therefore invite applications from candidates who may have little experience in scholarly publishing but who are interested in learning more about and contributing to the publication of the journal. Associate Editors will receive mentorship and training.
- Managing Editor. This editor oversees the production of the journal by working with all editors to ensure the timely review of manuscripts. In addition, the Managing Editor determines whether an incoming manuscript aligns with the journal’s aims and scope and, if so, directing it to the appropriate editors. The Managing Editor also works with the Editors-in-Chief to develop and maintain the journal’s operational and governance policies and to create resources for reviewers.
- Professional Development Coordinator. The Professional Development Coordinator(s) advances the journal’s efforts to diversify academic publishing by creating and implementing programming to support the academic writing goals of educational developers from historically minoritized backgrounds at various stages in their writing career. The Professional Development Coordinator(s) will oversee and further develop a slate of offerings, such as a writing circle and conversations with scholars whose work aligns with the aims and scope of the journal. In addition, the Coordinator(s) will oversee the relaunch of the POD Academic Writing Scholars program under the auspices of JDEED. The Professional Development Coordinators will not be charged with reviewing a slate of articles; however, as a member of the editorial team, the Coordinator(s) will be invited to give “second reads” in order to gain more experience in that aspect of editing and to stay current on conversations in the field. The Coordinator will also work with other members of the editorial team to ensure the alignment of the journal's editorial and professional development work.
Additional notes:
- All editors commit to facilitating drop-in hours and writing circles, on a rotating basis.
- Successful candidates will have a history of productive collaboration, approximately 2-5 hours per week to dedicate to journal, and the ability to meet firm timelines for publication. We are especially interested in candidates who are dedicated to and have demonstrated experience in fostering diverse perspectives in our field.
- We particularly invite individuals from historically minoritized and/or marginalized groups to participate in the journal as writers, editors, and/or reviewers. These individuals may include, but are not limited to: individuals who identify as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color, as defined within the U.S. context); LGBTQIA+ individuals; and individuals with disabilities. We also particularly welcome individuals working at institutions traditionally underrepresented in POD including, but not limited to: Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Native American Tribal Colleges, Hispanic-Serving Institutions or Hispanic Area Colleges and Institutions, Minority-Serving Institutions (or those aspiring to become MSIs), and community colleges.
- We welcome applications from candidates currently at institutions of higher education and/or in traditional educational development roles, as well as those working outside of a college or university setting and/or in roles related to educational development.
- POD membership is not required in order to apply for a position; however, you will need an active POD membership in order to serve as an editor. If membership poses a hardship for you, please don't let that deter you from applying. If your application is successful, we will work with you to secure membership.
