Editorial Team

Overview

The editorial team of The Journal of Diversity and Equity in Educational Development (JDEED) comprises two Editors-in-Chief, a Managing Editor, a Production Editor, 3-4 Associate Editors, and 1-2 Professional Development Coordinators. Below we detail the duties of the editorial team in order to provide transparency into our processes and to demystify the work of journal editors.

About the Roles

The duties of the Editor-in-Chief include: overseeing the overall direction of the journal, coordinating the editorial board meetings and mentor Associate Editors, communicating with the POD Network and POD DEI Committee on operational and financial matters, responding to queries and meeting with potential authors, serving as the second-round reviewers for articles undergoing editorial review, and also serving as section editors, overseeing a group of article types.

The Managing Editor oversees the production of the journal primarily by determining whether an incoming manuscript aligns with the journal’s aims and scope and then directing it to the appropriate editors. If so, they will assign the article to the appropriate Associate Editor. The Managing Editor also works with the Editors-in-Chief to develop and maintain the journal’s operational and governance policies.

Associate Editors oversee one or more article types, or sections (e.g., Research, Reflections on Practice, Commentaries). For those sections, the Associate Editors select reviewers for articles undergoing the peer review process; manage the review process for each article in their section from initial review to decision; and provide training and feedback to reviewers. Associate Editors also review and revise rubrics as needed, and serve as the first-round reviewer for manuscripts undergoing editorial review. Associate Editors play a meaningful role in shaping the journal’s content by overseeing peer reviews, guiding and mentoring authors, and helping ensure that final manuscripts align with our standards and mission. We are particularly proud of the scope of the Associate Editor position, as we view it as entry-point into to academic publishing: incoming Associate Editors may have little familiarity with the work of scholarly publishing but will receive mentorship and training to allow them to become Editors-in-Chief with this publication or another.

The Production Editor works with the Editors-in-Chief to hire, coordinate, and oversee any vendors contracted for the final production of issues. The Production Editor ensures that articles are copyedited, typeset, and shared on the journal’s website. The Production Editor also secures images and/or any other necessary artifacts from authors in order to finalize and publish articles. Like the Associate Editor role, the Production Editor position is an entry point for those who want to learn more about academic publishing.

The Professional Development Coordinators advance the journal’s efforts to diversify academic publishing by creating and implementing programming to support the academic writing goals of educational developers from historically minoritized backgrounds at various stages in their writing career. The Professional Development Coordinators will determine a slate of offerings, such as a writing circle and facilitated conversations with scholars whose work aligns with the aims and scope of the journal. In addition, they will oversee the relaunch of the POD Academic Writing Scholars program under the auspices of JDEED. The Professional Development Coordinators will not be charged with reviewing a slate of articles; however, as members of the editorial team, the Coordinators will be invited to give “second reads” in order to gain more experience in that aspect of editing and to stay current on conversations in the field. The Coordinator will also work with other members of the editorial team to determine whether any journal contributors might serve as guest speakers and vice versa, and to imagine ways the journal might highlight the work of writing group participants (e.g., curate a special issue).
