Peer Review Process

Please see this page for a full description of JDEED's review process.

Removal

Once published, a journal article cannot generally be revised or removed. We feel it is important to provide perpetual access to materials published whenever possible and appropriate. However, we will remove publications under special circumstances, including in the case of submission errors, rights violations, or inappropriate content. Please be aware, however, that even after the removal of a work, a citation to the work will remain in our system, along with a URL.

If you would like your work removed from eScholarship, please contact the editors.

Revising Work

Once manuscripts are published, we are generally unable to revise them. If a significant error or omission is discovered, contact the editors.

Rights and Permissions

Journal of Diversity and Equity in Educational Development does not require copyright transfer, only permission to publish and archive the article. Copyright holders retain copyright ownership, granting a nonexclusive license to the journal and eScholarship to publish the article, meaning that the author may also publish it elsewhere. Before submitting an article to the journal, please be sure that all necessary permissions have been cleared in any third party material. All articles published in the journal are subject to the journal’s author agreement, which is available in the first step of the submission process or by contacting us to request a copy.

Open Access Statement

This is an open access journal which means that all content is freely available without charge to the user or his/her institution. Users are allowed to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without asking prior permission from the publisher or the author.

Long-Term Preservation Policy

All materials submitted to eScholarship are automatically deposited in CDL's Merritt Preservation Repository for long-term preservation.

Ethics Statement

The Journal of Diversity and Equity in Educational Development (JDEED) publishes manuscripts primarily about historically minoritized communities within higher education; therefore, it is imperative that all work published in the journal adhere to the highest ethical standards.

We aim to support you in navigating ethical dilemmas or questions. If you have questions on our ethical guidelines and/or potential conflicts of interest, please contact us.

  • Conflicts of Interest: Scholarly publishing depends on trust. In order to maintain the integrity and trustworthiness of content published in JDEED, we ask all contributors to the journal to disclose any potential conflicts of interest that may influence their research. A conflict of interest occurs when an author's personal or financial interests could compromise their objectivity in conducting research; affect their impartiality in reporting research findings; and/or otherwise create a perception of bias in their work. When submitting a manuscript for review, JDEED authors must disclose the following types of potential conflicts:
    • Consultancy arrangements
    • Honoraria or research funding
    • Any other factors that might lead to bias or create the appearance of a conflict
  • Research Approval: Research involving human participants must have received appropriate ethical approval from relevant institutional review boards or ethics committees.
  • Data Sharing and Reproducibility: Transparency is a key feature of ethical research, and data sharing, in particular, allows other researchers to build upon and/or reproduce your empirical findings. We therefore require authors to make their data publicly available (while also maintaining participant confidentiality and adhering to ethical and legal guidelines) and encourage you to provide a link to your data in your manuscript. If you are unable to share the data publicly we ask you to include a brief statement in your manuscript discussing why you are unable to share your data.
  • Authorship: Attributing authorship allows for visibility in the field and the recognition of one’s contribution to a manuscript. Anyone who significantly contributed to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of a manuscript should be listed as a co-author on your manuscript. There are several ways to determine author order, including the degree of contribution, alphabetically, or by other factors decided among the authors. We encourage you to adopt an author order that all of your authors, particularly those with relatively less status or rank, find fair. By being listed as an author, you affirm your agreement with the content of the manuscript and that you consent to the submission of the manuscript to JDEED.
  • Review Process: The integrity of the publication process extends to the work of reviewers.  We hold ourselves (editorial reviewers) to the same ethical standards as external (peer) reviewers. We ask all reviewers to evaluate and recommend manuscripts based on (1) the extent to which the authors are successful in executing their intended goal; (2) the contribution of the manuscript to the field, including its engagement with other texts and/or contributions to the field, when applicable; (3) the strength of the evidence offered (when applicable), and/or novelty of the perspective shared.  We ask all peer and editorial reviewers to:
    • Accept only those reviews for which you are able to provide evaluations based on your knowledge of similar work and/or your experiences in the field;
    • Disclose any potential conflicts of interest, including personal or professional conflicts;
    • Treat all manuscript content confidentially during the review process;
    • Declare any usage of AI in the review process. AI may only be used on a limited basis, if at all, in the peer review process, in order to improve the quality of the written feedback in a peer review report. We ask that you disclose any AI use when submitting your peer review report. However, in order to protect the authorship and privacy of authors, the manuscript itself should not be submitted, in part or in its entirety (including figures and tables), to a generative AI program.
    • Reach out to the editors if anything changes after you accept the review, such as the emergence of a conflict, or if you realize after accepting the review that the topic is beyond your scope of expertise. We are thankful for reviewers’ time and labor, and want to ensure that both reviewers and writers are supported.
  • Concerns, Complaints and Appeals: We take your concerns seriously and aim to be as transparent as appropriate in addressing concerns and complaints.

The Editorial Team (e.g., the Editors-in-Chief, Associate Editors, etc.) handles editorial decisions. Therefore if you have questions about the editorial process, such as the timeline for a decision, questions about reviewer feedback, or concerns about ethical violations or misconduct with regard to a published article or article under review (e.g., plagiarism, data fabrication, etc.) please first direct these issues to the Editorial Team.

  • In the event of errors, misconduct, or ethical breaches in the publication of an article, the Editorial Team, in consultation with the Editorial Board, will take appropriate measures, including issuing corrections or retracting articles as necessary.

The Editorial Board is the journal’s governing body. Please reach out to the Editorial Board if:

  • You have concerns that you do not believe have been resolved successfully by the Editorial Team;
  • You have concerns about members of the Editorial Team or editorial process, including, but not limited to, experiences of bias;
  • You have any other matters beyond the scope of the editorial process; or
  • You are unsure whom to contact.

Please note: the Editorial Board is unable to overturn an editorial decision (e.g., a rejection of a manuscript) or re-open a manuscript review unless upon investigation it finds instances of bias, unnecessary delays, or other inappropriate actions in the review process.

You will receive confirmation of any concern and complaint submitted to the Editorial Team and/or Board within five business days. You will be informed if any external consultations are necessary (e.g., with editors of peer journal; the POD office; etc.), but your identity and the details of your complaint will be kept confidential. The investigating body (the Editorial Team or Board) will provide you with periodic updates on the status of the review or investigation, as well as final decisions, in writing.
