Subject: New POD Journal: Journal of Diversity and Equity in Educational Development (JDEED)
Date: November 4, 2024
Dear POD Colleagues,
We are excited to announce the launch of the Journal of Diversity and Equity in Educational Development (JDEED), an open-access, peer-reviewed journal of the POD Network, published by the University of California eScholarship. The purpose of JDEED is to develop and sustain a scholarly space for minoritized voices in higher education and to center dynamic conversations about diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) practices, theories, and possibilities in educational development in the North American higher education context.
Specifically, that means that JDEED (1) publishes educational development scholarship that centers minoritized groups in a North American higher education context and (2) implements practices and policies to diversify academic scholarship by supporting educational developers from historically minoritized backgrounds at various stages in their writing career with resources needed to advance their research projects and interests.
JDEED was founded to diversify educational development scholarship in terms of the types of articles published, the authors featured, and the composition of editorial teams and boards. Through this publication, we hope to expand not only what counts as scholarship in educational development, but also who counts as a scholar. We believe there is a need for a journal like JDEED in our field, a publication in which the narratives, voices, practices, and knowledge of minoritized peoples are centered.
Particularly at this historical moment-- one with a looming presidential election that will have consequences for the lives and rights of many, a moment in which many of our educational development colleagues live and work in states and institutions in which even the word ‘diversity’ is verboten-- doing DEIB work in educational development can be a harrowing, exhausting, and isolating experience. Therefore, through JDEED we hope to offer a space of scholarship, community, possibility, and joy.
To that end, some defining features of JDEED include:
Accepting a variety of article types to welcome contributors of different interests and experience levels, such as commentaries (short op-ed pieces) and conversations (dialogues about ideas in the field), in addition to empirical research articles;
Demystifying the writing and publication process by featuring sections such as “From Draft to Manuscript,” reflection pieces in which contributors share their writing practice and process;
Committing to recruiting and mentoring Associate Editors who may not necessarily have extensive experience with academic publishing;
Offering professional development resources and opportunities such as an informal bi-weekly writing circle to provide structure and community for writers, monthly drop-in hours, and a “Meet the Scholar” series facilitated by prominent thinkers in our field;
Relaunching and housing the POD Academic Writing Scholars Program to provide writers from historically underrepresented groups and institutions with the tools and network needed to advance their projects;
Providing guidance and training for reviewers so that they may provide developmental, constructive, and asset-based feedback to writers; and
Facilitating thoughtful conversations about how this journal might serve all members of our community, particularly those working in spaces hostile to DEIB efforts.
Our founding of this journal, in collaboration with the POD DEI Committee, POD Executive Director Danielle Gabriel, and colleagues from across the POD Network, is a product of many years of relationship-building, co-mentoring, and hard work. Therefore, please take a moment to celebrate with us this significant demonstration of POD’s ongoing commitment to sustaining and growing diversity, equity, and inclusivity within our organization, our work spaces, and in higher education.
